History of Sweet Sams Java Joint
Sweet Sams started in 1993 as Park Place Coffee Roasters in Newark Ohio. Phenomenonally successful and ahead of the coffee craze curve the business sold for a great (sweat equity) profit six months later.
Moving to where the owners hearts were 500 mile away, Sweet Sam's (named after their daughter) opened in Charlevoix, Michigan. Continuing the tradition of quality coffee roasting, they were opened for business that summer. Included in their sales were gourmet coffees, gift baskets, Northern Michigan jar and other tasty products that would go along well specialty coffee.
Recognizing they were only getting about 25% of the walking tourist traffic flow they moved a couple of blocks away but opened another duplicate coffee shop in Harbor Springs, Michigan - just a few miles from Petoskey. Sweet Sams then settled in and enjoyed the wonderful repeat and internet coffee trade. An 800 number was added this year - 1995 that being 1-800-792-JAVA.
In 2002, the owners decide to re-claim their personal lives and went virtual and wholesale only by selling the retail portion of the business.
The Sweet Sam's Java Joint Mission
As coffee "snobs" we know what a good cup of coffee tastes like. All coffee tastes best when it is fresh from the roasting. Yes there are certain things you can do to lengthen the freshness, however, the best coffee is that fresh out of the roaster. Our goal is to provide our clients with just that. Coffee to you within 24 hours of roasting. All of us know what coffee smells like. Unfortunately, when we taste it in a brew it doesn't taste like it smells. OUR"S DOES!!! We roast in small batches in a continuous process via a Carrousel Roaster. The beans are roasted in a chamber that allows the beans to be levitated and roasted in and air chamber never touching the hot metal surfaces of the roasters. This is very different from traditional roasters that are drum type and creat a burnt taste (that some people find as typical of the largest coffee chain in the world) that takes away from the uniqueness of varietals and blends.
